サムライと聞くと、どのようなイメージを持つでしょうか。サムライという言葉は元々は朝廷の貴族に仕える職業の名前です。はじめは騎馬戦を担当する人だけがサムライと呼ばれましたが、日本の中世になると地域の中で朝廷には属さないサムライが出てきました。こうしてサムライの時代がスタートしました。
サムライというと江戸のイメージが強いかもしれませんが、江戸時代は平和でありサムライは実戦で戦う事はほとんどありませんでした。しかし、サムライのルーツである中世のサムライは戦う事が本当に仕事でした。戦うサムライは江戸ではなく、日本の中世にいたのです。
What do you think of when you hear the word "samurai"? The word samurai was originally the name of an occupation that served the nobility of the imperial court. However, by the middle ages of Japan, samurais, who did not belong to the imperial court, emerged. This is the real start of the samurai.
When you think of samurai, the image of Edo may be strong. However, since the Edo period was peaceful, samurais rarely fought in actual battle. However, the medieval samurai, who are the roots of the samurai, really did their job to fight. The fighting samurai were not in Edo, but in the Middle Ages of Japan.

なんと、朝廷が２つに別れて日本で争いをはじめたのです。この２つのグループを北朝グループと南朝グループといいます。しかし、時と共に北朝グループが優勢になっていきます。そこで、南朝のトップであった御醍醐天皇は自分の息子たちを日本全国各地に送り込んでゲリラ戦を開始していきます。今でも歌舞伎などでは南北朝をルーツにした話が人気です。

To my surprise, the Imperial Court was split into two and started fighting in Japan. These two groups are called the Northern Group and the Southern Group. However, over time, the Northern group began to gain the upper hand. 武光は存分に実力を発揮し、次々に戦での勝利を重ねました。しかし一方で、元来の後継者ではなかったという背景から、自らの地位を維持することや九州全体を支配する大義名分の確保が課題でした。そんな時、はるばる京都からやって来た一人の若者がいました。13年の月日をかけて菊池へと到着した南朝のプリンス、懐良親王です。2人の運命の出会いは、時代を変えるうねりへと発展していきます。
全国で南朝グループが圧倒的不利になっていく中、九州では次々に北朝との戦に勝利します。そして遂に全九州の平定に成功。この奇跡のような大勝利を成し遂げた伝説のサムライこそが、今の熊本県菊池市に拠点を構える菊池一族のリーダー菊池武光でした。

Kikuchi Takemitsu was the greatest samurai in Kyushu who was active during the North and South period. Takemitsu was not originally in the position to be the legitimate heir to the Kikuchi clan. However, the head of the Kikuchi clan at the time couldn't stand the confusion of the time and threw away his position. Kikuchi Takemitsu became the head of the clan in order to unite them.
Takemitsu won battle after battle, and in the blink of an eye, he brought the Kikuchi clan together. However, it was difficult for Takemitsu to maintain his position or to dominate the entire Kyushu region. Because they were not the original heirs. Then there was a young man who had arrived from Kyoto after 13 years. This is the Prince Kaneyoshi of the Southern group, and their fateful meeting was a movement that will change the times.
While the Southern groups were becoming overwhelmingly disadvantaged throughout the country, the Southern group defeated the Northern group one after another in Kyushu. And finally, they succeeded in unifying all Kyushu.
