筑後川の戦いは日本三大合戦の一つと言われています。九州史上最大の戦で、南朝方四万騎と北朝方六万騎という不利な状況から南朝方が勝利し、武光の九州制覇に王手をかけることになった極めて重要な一戦です。しかも相手は文字通り親の仇の少弐一族。絶対に負けられない戦いでした。

武光側から深夜奇襲をかけたところから始まった戦でしたが、数の不利は圧倒的で、夜明けごろから次第に南朝軍が押され始めます。懐良親王はこの状況を見て、兵を奮い立たせるために自ら戦陣に突入しますが、功に逸る敵の将兵に取り囲まれ、重傷を負いました。武光はこの時、離れた場所にいたため、自分で駆けつけることは出来ません。相当な絶望感を感じたことでしょう。しかし運よく味方の別動隊が親王を助けに駆けつけ、親王は保護されて安全な場所に撤退していきました。
この状況に、武光は最後の突撃をかける決意をします。ここで状況を覆すことが出来なければ、全てが終わる。その覚悟を持って、武光は全軍に怒号をかけました。

「かねて誓うはこの時ぞ！全軍、我と共にこの場を死に場所とせよ！」
 

敵の矢が武光の鎧にハリネズミのように突き刺さっても、武光は意に介さず太刀をふるい、馬は傷つくたびに17度も乗り換えました。兜が割れて面が晒され、ここぞとばかりに襲い掛かった敵将を返り討ちにして首を刎ね、その兜を奪って被り、首は剣先に突き立てて突入したため敵軍は一気に崩れ、戦は南朝軍の勝利に終わりました。
